Yorkshire Terrier Puppies Now Available for Hawaii Families

At Essence of Grace Yorkies in Southern California, we’re excited to share that one of our Yorkshire Terrier puppies will be making the journey to Kona, Hawaii on October 1. This will be our very first Yorkie placement in Hawaii, and now that we’ve successfully gone through the process, we’re ready to help other Hawaii families welcome their own Yorkshire Terrier puppy in the future.
The Hawaii Puppy Import Process
Hawaii is the only rabies-free state in the U.S., which means the import process is strict and requires advanced planning. Families should expect both a longer timeline and higher costs than a typical puppy delivery within the mainland. Here’s what the process looks like:
Microchip – Must be in place before vaccinations.
Rabies Vaccines – Two required:
First at 12 weeks old
Second at least 30 days later
FAVN Rabies Titer Test – A blood sample is drawn 30 days after the second rabies shot and sent to an approved lab. A mandatory 30-day waiting period begins when the lab receives results.
Neighbor Island Permit (NIIP) – Since this puppy is going to Kona, we applied for the NIIP. Arriving on a neighbor island requires additional permits and fees compared to Honolulu.
Health Certificate – Within 10 days of travel, our veterinarian completes a full exam, verifies the microchip, administers flea treatment, and issues an official health certificate for travel.
The entire process adds up to $1,500–$2,000 in veterinary care, paperwork, and travel coordination — separate from the price of the puppy.
Boarding and Training While Waiting for Travel
Because Hawaii’s process takes several months to complete, puppies must stay with us longer than normal before they can go home. During that time, we continue raising the puppy as part of our household — feeding, caring, grooming, and socializing daily.
For this reason, a boarding fee will apply for the extra months until the puppy is ready to travel. Boarding ensures the puppy has a safe and structured environment while awaiting clearance to fly.
Some families also choose to add premium training during this extended stay. Training is separate from boarding and completely optional. In this case, the family we are serving in Kona requested a customized training plan, tailored to their lifestyle and unique needs.

Kona vs. Honolulu
Most pets arrive in Honolulu, which has the most straightforward airport inspection process. But because this puppy is going directly to Kona, we applied for the Neighbor Island Inspection Permit (NIIP). This requires extra paperwork, coordination, and fees, but allows families to receive their puppy at Kona without transferring through Honolulu.
For families on Kona, Maui, or Kauai, this process is slightly more expensive and time-consuming, but completely manageable with the right preparation.
Pickup or Flight Nanny — Two Options
In this case, the family is flying to California to pick up their puppy personally and accompany them to Hawaii. Many families prefer this option.
However, for those who cannot make the trip, we also offer our flight nanny service, where we personally travel with the puppy to their new home. Both options ensure the puppy arrives safely and stress-free.
